If there’s anything that I love about my career in photography it is definitely the lasting relationships that I have made with my clients. Take Two Cent Sam for instance. I had the privilege in working with them for their promotional photos that they will be using for their new album and a few weeks ago I was asked to work with them again. This time wasn’t for promo photos though. I had an opportunity to watch the guys perform at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square in a Battle of the Bands competition. Two Cent Sam was first of three bands performing that night and they set the bar high!

After what seemed like an impossible task, I was able to get a backstage pass to hang out with the guys and capture a few moments before their performance.

The guys put on one hell of a show. Although they were under a tight time frame since it was a Battle of the Bands competition, they still put on a kick ass show.

You may recognize these guys from a promo shoot that I did with them a few months ago. Matt and Andrew Como recently performed at Lulu’s in Port Jefferson, New York to celebrate the release of their new EP album, “Get Me Back To You” (download the album on iTunes here). The guys put on a great show for a friends, family, and local music lovers performing their original music as well as a few covers of Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones, Weezer and a few more. It’s been great working with these guys throughout their entire project and am really looking forward to watching them grow.

The stage at Lulu’s was much better than anticipated. This venue has seen many owners over the years and it’s been quite some time since I was there, so I didn’t know exactly what to expect. I unfortunately did not have much time to check it out beforehand. I wanted to make sure I was well prepared so I brought along a few speedlights with me in case the lighting sucked. One light was set to the back left corner of the stage and the other was set up on a small bench in the back corner of the room. Both triggered by Pocket Wizards. Luckily, I did not have to use the flashes as much as I thought I would have thanks to decent lighting in the venue. I did use the flashes often though because I really liked the effects it was producing, especially in the motion blur shots below.

If there is one performance that sticks out in my mind from the entire CMJ 2010 Music Marathon, it’s the one of energy packed Rocky Business. I had not heard of these guys before their show at Le Poisson Rouge but these guys made sure everyone in that room knew who they were. Their high energy, loud as all hell (in a great way!) and just badass show had me in complete awe. Jumping off speakers, kicking drums across the stage, running all over the stage and actually hitting my camera lens at the end of a song. Next time I gotta take at least one step back from the stage when Strictly Business (the guy in the crown, who is a killer rapper) is front and center.
